Daily Devotions Monday August 1, 2005

Pastor Ludwig is writing the devotions this week on the Scripture text from
2 Timothy 3: 14-17. The focus is the importance and place of Holy Scripture
in our daily lives.

2 Timothy 3:14-17 (The Message paraphrase)

"Stick with what you learned and believed, sure of the integrity of your
teachers-- why, you took in the sacred Scriptures with your mother's milk!
There's nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to
salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is
God-breathed and useful one way or another--showing us truth, exposing our
rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God's way. Through
the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us."

In an age when the Bible is more and more considered to be mere ancient
human wisdom, I continue to believe that it is the life-giving and Holy
Spirit-inspired word of God for all people throughout all time. That is what
St. Paul is telling Timothy in this text. Paul tells Timothy, a very young
pastor, that the inspired Scriptures train us in living God's way. How
often do we just live and make our decisions based upon cultural instincts
and gut reactions?

Last night I decided to "take out" the huge hornets' nest which was hanging
from the lowest limb of our front-yard maple tree. I waited until dark and
then sprayed the opening and the entire nest with the can in one hand and
the flashlight in the other hand shining upon the nest. After being stung
and running around the yard like a wild man, I humbly retreated to my study,
went on-line and Googled "hornet nest." One site said that the best time to
spray the nest was at dusk (got that one right) but never ever shine a light
on the nest (oops). If only I had read the article and studied the facts
before acting I might have one less swollen finger.

God has graced us with Holy Scripture. Let's read the Bible and allow God to
speak to us, teaching us how to live in God's way. Life will be more full
and less troublesome if we have God's advice before we go out the door to
face the day.
