Daily Devotions Tuesday August 2, 2005

Pastor Ludwig is writing the devotions this week on the Scripture text from
2 Timothy 3: 14-17. The focus is the importance and place of Holy Scripture
in our daily lives.

2 Timothy 3:14-17 (The Message paraphrase)

"Stick with what you learned and believed, sure of the integrity of your
teachers-- why, you took in the sacred Scriptures with your mother's milk!
There's nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to
salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is
God-breathed and useful one way or another--showing us truth, exposing our
rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God's way. Through
the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us."

When I was a teenager, I did a lot of golfing with my Father. We would
typically discover another twosome at the clubhouse before teeing off. One
particular Saturday I was eager to tell our companion couple about the
birdie that I shot the week before and to my father's embarrassment I boldly
described my accomplishment to our new-found companions. Several fairways
later, my Dad took me aside and with disappointment in his voice (yet love
in his heart) said, Barry it is not good to brag about your accomplishments.
If you are good at something, people will see it and acknowledge it.

It was a message that stung and yet one which I needed to hear. Holy
Scripture does that from time to time as well. There are times when we
simply need to be corrected; for our own good and the good of others. God's
word will always tell us the truth about ourselves and about our God. Let us
not ignore or explain away those portions of the Bible that may tell us what
we do not wish to hear but which we need for lives that are strong and true.
