Daily Devotion Friday August 26, 2005
This week's devotions are written by Pastor Ludwig and are based upon the
opening greetings found in letters of the New Testament.
Revelation 1:4-5 (Message paraphrase)
I, John, am writing this to the seven churches in Asia province: All the
best to you from THE GOD WHO IS, THE GOD WHO WAS, AND THE GOD ABOUT TO
ARRIVE, and from the Seven Spirits assembled before his throne, and from
Jesus Christ--Loyal Witness, Firstborn from the dead, Ruler of all earthly
kings. Glory and strength to Christ, who loves us, whose blood--washed our
sins from our lives,
Thought
I have been saddened and at times angry at the perversion of Christian
thought in general and the book of Revelation in particular found in the
money-making Hollywood-ish "Left Behind" series of books. More disturbing
has been the eager gullibility of Americans to believe that this is really
what Scripture says and teaches.
Contrary to the "left-behind" picture of an avenging God, John begins his
letter to the churches in Asia Province (modern Turkey) with a word of
comfort and promise. The all powerful and eternal God is about to arrive but
how shall we see him? We shall see and know God through His Son, Jesus
Christ whose blood has been shed for the forgiveness of our sins. This God
is not a God who desires to leave anyone behind but in Christ has a plan of
salvation to "draw all people" unto himself.
Whatever this day brings, God will never leave you behind. He is not a God
of threat but of invitation. His strength and grace shall cover you today
and always.
