Daily Devotion Thursday, December 1, 2005

The devotions this week are written by Christine Carlsen-Jones the Director
of Adult Discipleship at Zion. As we begin the season of Advent, she will be
exploring the marvelous words of the prophet Isaiah.

Isaiah 11: 9-11

Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings;

Lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings,

Lift it up, do not fear; Say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!”

See, the Lord God comes with might,  And his arm rules for him;

His reward is with him, And his recompense before him.

He will feed his flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs in his
arms,

And carry them in his bosom, And gently lead the mother sheep.

In case you didn’t know:

The portrait of God as a shepherd reflects traditional royal imagery in
antiquity. It is a picture of trust in God’s strength to gather the people
like a shepherd gathers the flock together, God’s tenderness as God cradles
the lambs and carries them to safety and rest.

Points to ponder:

In times of change, of wilderness experiences, of exhaustion and weariness,
we rely on God’s promise of comfort and strength.

In times of celebration, joy, and safety, we are also reminded that we are
in God’s loving and strong arms. Do you rest in that knowledge, too?
Sometimes we are more distant from God when life is going well. What does
it feel like, to you, to rest joyfully in God’s gentle and powerful arms?

Thank you for your tender care. Remind me to give thanks. Remind me to
rest, peacefully, joyfully, in your arms. Amen.
