Daily Devotion Friday December 2, 2005

The devotions this week are written by Christine Carlsen-Jones the Director
of Adult Discipleship at Zion.

Mark 1:1-4

The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is
written in the prophet Isaiah,

“See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare
your way;

the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the
Lord, make his paths straight.’”

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of
repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

In case you didn’t remember:

The Hebrew word translated as ‘comfort’ that we considered earlier this week
encompasses the idea of repentance and sorrow, in addition to the sense of
compassion and pity. We are reminded in these opening verses of the Gospel
of Mark of the wilderness, of making the way straight for God. And we are
reminded that in not only that ancient story, but in our story, we are
called to repent and be forgiven.

Points to ponder:

To repent is to think differently, to have a change of heart and mind. In
your life, how have calls for repentance been used to heal? Have they been
used to harm? Why, for you, is it difficult to repent? To ‘turn around and
go another way’? What is, for you, the hope in repentance? For what are
you being called into repentance today? Can you hear that call? Will you
heed that call?

Thank you for the opportunity to repent., to turn toward you. To change in
ways you call me to change. Remind me to be quiet so I can listen to you.
Remind me of the comfort, strength, and hope you promise as I face the
changes you are calling me to make. Amen.
