Daily Devotion Monday November 14, 2005 Pt. 2
The Devotions this week are written by Erin Anderson, interim director of
Young Discipleship at Zion. Her theme is Preparing for Narnia, Preparing for
Jesus.
Part Two for Monday
When C.S. Lewis created the series The Chronicles of Narnia, he inter-wove
ideas that had roots in a larger story. Many that pick up the novels and
read them to their children find a familiarity with the characters, as if
they know them from somewhere else. It is like times when you are far away
from home or some other well-known place and you suddenly smell the aroma of
cooked food or the scent of a flower that takes you back to that place you
have been before. You are reminded, for just a moment, that home is not as
far away as you may have believed. Or maybe there has been a time when you
meet a new person who gives you the feeling of someone you already know,
someone you know well, even though it is your first time meeting.
These experiences are likely what Lewis had in mind. He didn't want to
create a metaphor, but an expression- a vague, yet definitely recognizable
likeness of a bigger story. "He [Lewis] wanted to write a myth for
children that hinted at a real story for both children and adults alike.
This story-within-the story is of the Creator of all things coming back to
His creation and purchasing the foolish and fallen with His life. It is the
story of the Christian faith." (from Interlinc's Narnia: Youth Worker Kit)
Hopefully, people (you) will dig into this mysterious sense/scents of
familiarity to discover this age old story. May you again take a whiff of
the moment and remember the love God has for you; right now and has always!
That God would be humble enough to become human to save us from our foolish
selves. That we might recognize our dire need for a Savior and the promise
of unconditional everlasting love. As we linger in this moment, may we wait
with anticipation for the coming of the Christ child. And may the story of
Narnia be a reminder of the amazing gift that has come and is coming again!
Ecclesiastes 3:11, John 8:12, & 1 Corinthians 2:7-9
God, you have given us many reminders of your love for us, today, always and
in the coming days. In this day, may we see you in the familiar; the smile
of a neighbor, the hug from our children, the kind word from a friend and in
the beauty of your wonderful creation. May we remember that we are a story
within Your greater story; that You are, You have been and You will be here
to save and love us. AMEN.
