Daily Devotions Monday July,11, 2005
The devoter this week is Karen Ludwig. The texts this week focus on the
theme of heat. In these hot days of summer, we need to use good protective
clothing and sunscreen to avoid getting burned. God also, does not want us
to get burned.
Hosea 7: 6-7
For they are kindled like an oven, their heart burns within them; all night
their anger smolders; in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire. All of
them are hot as an oven, and they devour their rulers. All their kings have
fallen; none of them calls upon me.
Meditation
This text talks about the hot anger of the leaders and the people that Hosea
is trying to turn back toward the Lord. The analogy of being hot as an
oven is one that all chefs and cooks would understand. Too much heat and
the cake burns. The people of Israel were hot with anger against their
rulers so they would kill them. And in their heated state they could not see
what God was offering to them.
It would be easy in these troubled times to be angry with world leaders,
either they are doing what we agree with or just the opposite. But being
angry just burns the cakeit doesnt facilitate world peace. Hosea offers
respite to those burned by the heat of anger.
6: 3 Let us know, let us press on to know the Lord; His appearing is as sure
as the dawn; he will come to us like the showers ,like the spring rains that
water the earth.
The call for us is to come in out of the heat-come away from anger-turn back
to the Lord and receive the cooling showers of the spring rain. What type of
heated anger do we need to let go of? Can we pray for world leaders so that
peace may prevail and that we may be called peacemakers.
Cant you feel those first light drops of rain descending to renew the
earth?
Give thanks for a gracious and merciful God who calls us away from the heat
of anger.
