Daily Devotions Wednesday July 13, 2005

The devoter this week is Karen Ludwig. The texts this week focus on the
theme of “heat”. In these hot days of summer, we need to use good protective
clothing and sunscreen to avoid getting burned. God also, does not want us
to get burned.

Proverbs 22: 24-2

Make no friends with those given to anger, and do not associate with hot
heads, or you may learn their ways and entangle yourself in a snare.

Part A (tune in tomorrow for Part B)

Did anyone ever tell you: “You’ll be known by the company you keep?” My mom
did.

She wanted me to choose wisely among the kids at school those who would
become my friends. As a little girl I saw anger in adults, I didn’t like it,
in fact I feared it when it happened and I avoided those who engaged in it.
Angry out bursts are ugly to watch. They are painful, they break up
relationships, they demean and diminish and degrade.

We had a dog, Maggie that we got from the humane society. Whenever she would
hear a voice raised in a manner suggesting anger she would shake all over
and hang her head or go behind a chair. Seeing this response always pulled
at my heart strings. Obviously she, too, in her early months was in a house
where she heard anger or she was the object of it.

Check the volume control on your conversations this week. Use the equalizer
feature to tone done harsh words and replace them with those that build up,
support and enrich the lives of others. And listen to your mother: choose
the company you keep wisely, find people to share your time with who are
loving, kind, gentle, sincere.
