Daily Devotions Wednesday July14, 2005
The devoter this week is Karen Ludwig. The texts this week focus on the
theme of heat. In these hot days of summer, we need to use good protective
clothing and sunscreen to avoid getting burned. God also, does not want us
to get burned.
Proverbs 15: 18
Those who are hot-tempered stir up strife, but those who are slow to anger
calm contention.
Proverbs 15: 28
The mind of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked
pours out evil.
Make no friends with those given to anger, and do not associate with hot
heads, or you may learn their ways and entangle yourself in a snare.
Part B
As the week heats up, we can find in these Proverbs a way out.
It can be very difficult to control our anger, especially if we think we
have a right to be angry. I would like to suggest that being angry takes
twice as much energy as being cool, calm and collected. Our bodies are not
made to safely stay in an angry state. Our blood pressure rises, our face
changes color, perspiration can be pervasive among other alternations. It
takes time to come down out of that angry state: and what damage has been
done in the meantime? Being slow to anger is an attribute we should strive
for. Think before you speak is the modern day adage. Count to ten is
another way to address this.
Listen to the second proverb; ponder how you are going to answer before you
say something in a hot tempered state that you will regret. Jesus could
have gotten angry hanging in the hot sun on that cross. But he asked for
forgiveness for his enemies.
Stay cool. Stay calm. Stay collected. It is energy efficient!
