Daily Devotions Friday July15, 2005

The devoter this week is Karen Ludwig. The texts this week focus on the
theme of “heat”. In these hot days of summer, we need to use good protective
clothing and sunscreen to avoid getting burned.  God also, does not want us
to get burned.

 

Revelation 7:13-17  

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white,
and where have they come from?"  I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that
knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great
ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the
Lamb.  For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him
day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne
will shelter them.  They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun
will  not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of
the throne will be their shepherd,  and he will guide them to springs of the
water of life,  and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

 

Saved from the Heat!

Our text offers us shelter from all that assails us.  That is our reward as
it was for those being persecuted during the time of the writing of
Revelation. They were given, as we are also given, the promise of eternal
life, the springs of the water of life.  What does this look and feel like?
It is shelter and food  and water, protection from the scorching heat! 

Maddie is another adjunct dog to our family. She comes over and visits. When
I take her for a walk and it is too hot, she will go only ½ the usual
distance, take care of business, and then turn determinedly  to home and
shelter from the heat, where water and treats are waiting. Who said dogs
were “dumb”?

 

What lovely, reassuring imagery is found in this text. Imagery of heaven, of
being in the presence of our God. In his presence their will be no more
sadness, all our tears will be wiped away.  Know that your reward has been
won for you by the salvation event of our Savior, the Lamb. All we have to
do is celebrate: worship our Lord. 

Come in out of the heat and  be cool--spend your time in celebration!!!
