Daily Devotion Wednesday July 20, 2005
This week's devotions are written by Kelsay Ludwig. We will follow the
story of creation as it is told in chapters 1 and 2 of Genesis.
Genesis 1:9-13
9 And God said, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered together
into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so. 10 God
called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he
called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, "Let the
earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of
every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it." And it was so.
12 The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every
kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God
saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning,
the third day.
The Third Day
Personally, I prefer seedless grapes, seedless watermelon, and seedless
oranges! So why all this emphasis on the seeds of the vegetation, and
the seeds of the fruit? Here we realize that God is not creating on a
whim or on the spur of the moment. Instead God has planned down to
every little detail, a sustainable, long-term earth; he creates fruit
and plants which bear their own seeds; seeds which hold the promise
perennial growth and provision! How do our ideals about the earth
compare with God's? Do we care for it in a way that nurtures and renews
our precious resources? Do we plant, water, and tend the earth with
future generations in mind? It is helpful to keep in mind our Creator's
long-term goals for a renewable, regenerating Earth.
