Daily Devotions Thursday November 3, 2005
This week's devotions are offered by Pastor Ludwig. The focus this week is
upon the simple but elusive idea of "joy."
Jeremiah15:16
"Thy words were found, and I ate them, and thy words became to me a joy and
the delight of my heart; for I am called by thy name, O Yahweh, God of
hosts."
Do you have a favorite food? Hands down, my favorite meal is pizza. In fact,
I never met a pizza I did not like! Jeremiah speaks about God's words to
him as a kind of favorite food which brings him joy. The best meal is one
which not only nourishes our bodies, but gives us an opportunity to sit
around the table with those we know and love. Such eating brings joy and a
true sense of well being because we are in the presence of those whom we
love and who love us. It is a safe place in the midst of all of life's
troubles. Words of laughter and serious dialog, of support and challenge are
all shared with an honest mutual acceptance. This is joy.
God feeds us with his Word of grace and acceptance and truth. It is no
accident that in the Gospel of John, Jesus is called, "The Word." Further,
it is no coincidence that we believe that in Holy Communion we receive the
body and blood of Jesus, the "Word." He has brought acceptance and hope. He
is pure joy and we are called by his name, Christian!
