This week’s devotions are written by Zion Seminarian, Kelsay Ludwig. We
will be looking at the theme of “construction” in the Bible.

Isaiah 40:1-5 Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly
to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty
is paid, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins.
A voice cries out: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make
straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted
up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become
level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the LORD shall be
revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD
has spoken."

Thought

The prophet, called “Second Isaiah”, is writing to the Israelites while they
are in captivity to the Babylonians. The Israelites have lost everything,
and above all else, they feel as though their God has abandoned them. “Take
Comfort!” Second Isaiah proclaims, “God is building a road!” What does it
mean for God to build a road? It means valleys will be lifted up, mountains
will be made low, uneven ground shall be made level! God is working a
miraculous construction project to get to the Israelites. God will stop at
nothing to save his people.

Like the Israelites, we are in captivity. Captivity to failing bodies, to
troubled minds, to exhausted hearts. We are held captive by sin, by
jealousy, and by fear of death. It is to us as well that Second Isaiah
speaks comfort. God is building a road to us. God began construction by
sending his own son Christ Jesus to save us. God will stop at nothing to
save his people.
