This week’s devotions are written by Zion Seminarian, Kelsay Ludwig. We
will be looking at the theme of “construction” in the Bible.

Genesis 11: 4-9 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a
tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves;
otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth."
The LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built.
And the LORD said, "Look, they are one people, and they have all one
language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that
they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down,
and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one
another's speech." So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the
face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore it
was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the
earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all
the earth.

Thought

“Let us build for ourselves…make a name for ourselves…” The purpose for
constructing this tower is one of self glorification. A great city must
reflect a great people…right? Wrong, says God. God promised to make his
people great and to give them a name, but they were not content to leave
that work to God. They focus all of their energy into this city, for all
the wrong reasons. What we build must always glorify God and care for the
needs of others and creation.

We are created to live, to work, to play, and to build for the good of our
neighbors. The people in Genesis 11 had completely forgotten this important
work. They would have done well to channel their energy into a habitat
house!!! Why do you construct? Why do you construct your career, your
time, your energy, and your family? Is it for your own good or the good of
your neighbor. Why do you construct your sentences the way you do? Do your
words tear down or build up?

Whatever it is you are constructing today, take care that it is for the good
of others…this is the joyous duty of the Christian!
