Daily Devotion Thursday November 10, 2005
This weeks devotions are written Zion Seminarian, Kelsay Ludwig. We will
be looking at the theme of construction in the Bible.
Matthew 16: 13-18
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,
"Who do people say the Son of Man is?" They replied, "Some say John the
Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the
prophets. "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Simon
Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus
replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to
you by man, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter,
and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not
overcome it.
Thought
The big bad wolf found out the hard way that the material you choose to
build with makes all the difference. One by one the little pigs houses
fell: first straw, then sticks
until the house of stone. The brick house
withstood the attacking gale of wolf-breath; it stayed up. Yes, the
material you choose for your structure, the foundation upon which it is laid
is essential!
This passage in Matthew informs us that Jesus knows the importance of
building with the right material. In fact, when Jesus sets out to build his
church, he knows he must begin on the right foundation. What is the
foundation that Jesus chooses? It is faith. You are the Christ. This is
the essential building material for Christs church: a confession of true
faith. The church built upon this solid foundation will withstand the
storms
Oh yes
there will be storms; storms of sadness, storms of loss,
stormy relationships- within and without these church-building walls. But
the foundation of faith withstands, endures, renews, and remains.
Blessed be God our Father who has built us a church on and with the rock of
faith. All else is twig and straw. Amen.
