Daily Devotion Wednesday November 16, 2005
The devotions this week are written by Pastor David Hendricks who looks at
the Kingship of Jesus.
Luke 19:1-7
He (Jesus) entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there
named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying
to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he
was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see
him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to that place,
he looked up and said to him, Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must
stay at your house today. So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him.
All who saw it began to grumble and said, He has gone to be a guest of one
who is a sinner.
Jesus ultimate response to this situation with Zacchaeus was simply, For
the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost. ( Luke 19:10) Have
you ever been lost in your lifetime? I dont mean those times when you
wasted hours traveling because you would not ask for directions. I am not
thinking of those moments when you missed your exit on that vacation trip.
I am talking about those periods of life when you had no idea what direction
you were to take. I am talking about the days when the sun is eclipsed by
uncertainty and heartache. I am talking about really being lost from the
holy light of Jesus Christ and yet hoping you might at least get a glimpse
of him at some point in time.
Jesus is our King. He is dressed in regal robes. He deserves our shouts of
praise. He is also the one who doesnt simply drive by our lives as if we
were bystanders watching the parade. Jesus gets out of his regal attire and
comes right up to us. He does this because, much like Zacchaeus, we dont
even know what he looks like. Jesus does know what we look like and sees
where we are. He comes to us so that he might come into our lives and be
with us. He comes to us so that we might be with him is his kingdom. His
presence in our lives can change us and the way we live.
Faithful God, you seek us out to rescue, strengthen, and fill us. May our
grateful response to your love be to reach out with generosity to others.
Amen.
