Daily Devotion Thursday November 17, 2005

The devotions this week are written by Pastor David Hendricks. He explores
the Kingship of Jesus.

 

Matthew 25: 37- 40

Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when was it that we saw you
hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And
when was it that we saw you naked and gave you clothing? And when was it
that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you? And the king will answer
them, “Truly I tell, you, just as you did it to one of the least of these
who are members of my family, you did it to me.” 

 

Thought

“Where would you look for God?” That is a questions proposed in Sundays and
Seasons, as it attempts to provide some reflections for preaching.  The
question is a very good question.  We should not be too quick to answer it!

 

Each day I drive into the office I pass by a community that is a relatively
short distance from Zion.  I actually am beginning to recognize some of the
people as they wait for a bus or walk to a store.  I don’t know their names,
but then again I don’t know many of the names of people I serve here at
Zion. A part of me wonders why so many of these folks near the church are
not seen on a Sunday at Zion.  I am not going to presume to know the answer
to my reflections, but I can’t help but wonder if I may have driven pass
Jesus yesterday.  Can I even dare to believe that Jesus is walking down
Maple?

 

Jesus is an odd king to associate God and himself with hunger, thirst,
nakedness, illness and prison.  A real king would never be found wanting.
King Jesus seems to be places no other king would go or be expected to be
found by the people he ruled.  What do we do with such a king?  What do we
do with such a king?

 

O God, open our eyes to see you face-to-face in those faces we all too often
do not even bother to notice. Amen.
