Daily Devotion Wednesday, November 30, 2005

The devotions this week are written by Christine Carlsen-Jones the Director
of Adult Discipleship at Zion. As we begin the season of Advent, she will be
exploring the marvelous text of Isaiah chapter 40.

Isaiah 11:6-8

A voice says, “Cry out!” And I said, “What shall I cry?”

All people are grass Their constancy is like the flower of the field.

The grass withers, the flower fades, When the breath of the Lord blows upon
it;

Surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades;

But the word of our God will stand forever.

People are grass?

The Babylonian empire’s rule is not forever. The people are exhausted,
weary. Human existence is transitory. God, however, is eternally
reliable. God’s word can revive us.

Points to ponder:

When have you been physically exhausted? Emotionally and spiritually weary?
How long has it taken to remember that you aren’t alone, that God has
promised to comfort and strengthen you? In what ways have you experienced
God’s comfort and strength? How does that change things? How do you –could
you – serve as God’s agent in comforting others?

Prayer

Thank you for the desperate moments. Remind me that I can hold on to your
promise of comfort. Remind me that sometimes you call me to comfort
another. Remind me that you are eternally reliable, and you can revive me.
Amen.
