Daily Devotion Monday October 3, 2005
The devotions this week are written by Pastor Ludwig who continues the
2005-2006 Zion Theme, "Who is Jesus," by exploring the "I AM" statements of
Jesus in the Gospel of John.
John 6: 35
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never
be hungry."
As a first wave baby-boomer I was raised in the 1950's on Wonder Bread. My
mother believed that if it was "modern" it was the best thing for you. She
was raised on coarse heavy grained bread but she wanted something better and
more modern for her children. Our bread was fluffy and white and light and
it was "enriched" with dozens of vitamins that were never even known when
she was a child. I must admit, I still get a hankering for peanut butter
and jelly sandwiches made with that bread.
We now know that in fact the bread my mother was raised on was the best and
the healthiest after all and we are willing to pay a premium for bread that
is pretty much the bread my mother ate in her copper-miner parent's poor
home.
Jesus promises that he is the bread that will nurture our souls. He is not
some post-modern pop psychology idea of wellness. He is the unchanging
source of acceptance, forgiveness and meaning. His nurturing love for us
does not change with the fads of the time. Let our Lord Jesus feed you today
with such substance and grace.
