Daily Devotions Tuesday October 4, 2005
The devotions this week are written by Pastor Ludwig who continues the
2005-2006 Zion Theme, "Who is Jesus," by exploring the "I AM" statements of
Jesus in the Gospel of John.
John 8: 12
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who
follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
It was a foggy autumn evening as I drove back to college after a weekend at
home. It was after midnight and halfway to my destination, the headlamps on
my car went out. It was impossible to continue. In those days before cell
phones, I pulled off to the side of the road to wait for morning. I worried
and fretted about the mid-terms I would be missing and it was downright
scary to be in total darkness parked on the shoulder of a state route.
Driving slowly along in the fog was a truck driver that passed by my
lightless car. Suddenly the idea occurred to me to allow the truck to be my
light. I immediately fell in behind the truck and followed for the next 100
miles.
The darkness can be intimidating and there are times when our own light is
simply not enough to cast out the foggy problems of life. Jesus invites us
to follow him and let his light become the hope and strength that guides us.
We do not need to park our lives on the shoulder because of the fog or the
darkness of this day. We belong to a Lord who casts out the darkness.
