Daily Devotions Friday October 7, 2005

The devotions this week are written by Pastor Ludwig who continues the
2005-2006 Zion Theme, "Who is Jesus," by exploring the "I AM" statements of
Jesus in the Gospel of John.

John 8:58

"Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I
am."

I am blessed with wonderful friends. They put up with my eccentricities,
encourage me when I am down, offer advice when asked (and sometimes when
they are not asked), share in my good times and in bad times. I have
wonderful friends! But there are times when they are frustrated with me,
because like me they are only human. There are times when the advice they
give is perhaps not the best. They are after all, only human. There are
moments when they are detached and are preoccupied by their own matters and
simply don't have time or energy for me. They are only..

In this wonderful "I am" statement, Jesus announces that he is not only a
friend to us, he is in fact God. The Old Testament name for God, is commonly
understood as "I am." Jesus is not only identifying himself as God the "I
Am," but he is affirming his timelessness. He was with his people before
Abraham was born; before they were officially God's people! Jesus is
certainly a friend but he is also our eternal God. If He has been here with
us before we were born, then it is certain that his love and strength,
understanding and peace will always be there for us. After all, he's God!
