Daily Devotions Tuesday October 11, 2005
The devotions this week are written by Pastor Hendricks who will be
exploring the theme of Jesus as our Great High Priest as described in the
New Testament letter to the Hebrew Christians.
Hebrews 4: 15
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our
weaknesses, but we have one who has been tested as we are, yet without sin.
What if we really believed that Jesus was like one of us? What if we
really believed that life placed challenges, temptations, and
disappointments before him that caused him to stop and think about where he
was going and what he was doing?? What if we really believed that Jesus
faced cloudy days and sleepless nights? What if life was filled with too
many options for him at times? What if all this were true, but he remained
connected to the way of God?
It makes a difference to me to believe that life did not go smoothly for
Jesus. My faith may falter and I may step off the narrow path, but Jesus
also experienced these testings in life. I may fail at the tests placed
before me, but he remained connected to the way of God. Thanks be to God, I
have someone I can turn to in my many moments of weakness. I can admit my
failures to him and he won't hold them against me. I can turn to the one who
did not fail the tests of life and believe he will not fail me as well.
So let us pray the prayer of Richard of Chichester, "O most merciful
Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know Thee more clearly, love Thee more
dearly, and follow Thee more nearly; for Thine own sake. Amen."
