Daily Devotions Friday October 14, 2005

 

The devotions this week are written by Pastor Hendricks who will be
exploring the theme of Jesus as our Great High Priest as described in the
New Testament letter to the Hebrew Christians.

 

1 Peter 2:9

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own
people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you
out of darkness into his marvelous light.

 

  The Epistles to the Hebrews seeks to demonstrate a special relationship
that Jesus Christ has with those who claim him as their Lord.  He is the
priest, who truly understands them, who has been in their shoes, who
continues to hear their petitions, and who is the entrance for them between
heaven and earth. He is not only the high priest offering up sacrifices for
the people, but through him his followers enter into the eternal reign of
God. He is the good news.

  We too have been designated as a priestly people.  We too can announce the
good news to those hiding in or covered in the darkness of sin.  We too can
offer up prayers on behalf of those shivering in fear from the onslaught of
evil and death.  We too may become sacrificial in the way we live so we can
become good news to those we touch each day of our existence.  

  We have this great honor to serve as a priestly people on earth.  Our
wonderful calling as the children God empowers us to minister to and with
the entire human family.  As Evelyn Underhill once reminded us, “We are the
agents of the Creative Spirit in this world”.  We are, therefore, the ones
who can “proclaim the mighty acts of him who called us out of darkness into
his marvelous light”.
