Daily Devotions Monday October 17, 2005
The devotions this week are written by Pastor Ludwig who is continuing the
theme of Jesus as our great high priest, by considering the Gospel of John,
chapter 17 which Bible scholars refer to as the "high priestly prayer" of
Jesus for his disciples.
John 17: 1-3 (Message paraphrase)
Jesus said these things. Then, raising his eyes in prayer, he said: Father,
it's time. Display the bright splendor of your Son So the Son in turn may
show your bright splendor. You put him in charge of everything human So he
might give real and eternal life to all in his charge. And this is the real
and eternal life: That they know you, The one and only true God, And Jesus
Christ, whom you sent.
Before his betrayal and crucifixion, Jesus prays this prayer. Surprisingly,
he does not pray for personal deliverance from the emotional and physical
pain that awaits him. He prays for his disciples. He prays for you and me.
Helen was on her death bed in the hospital. She knew that her time was short
as I held her hand and read from the Scriptures. I asked her if she would
like to pray; nodding her head she said, "I would like to pray for my
family.that they might know how much I love them and that I am OK. And so
we prayed for her husband and her children, that they might gain strength
for their continuing lives in that knowledge. As we said the "Amen" she
quietly slipped into the precincts of heaven. I made sure to tell the family
of her prayer for them.
In his high priestly prayer for us, Jesus expresses his desire that we know
how much we are loved by God and that we might have strength for living out
our days in peace and oneness with God. Whatever today brings you, may your
life be "rea" and your hope "eternal;" in Christ, your high priest.
