Daily Devotion Monday September 26, 2005

This week's devotions are written by Zion member, Dale Eckart.

Who is Jesus? One who cares for the young

He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder the,
for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." And he took the children
in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them. Mark 10:14,16 (NIV)

In our country, when a president or governor stops to spend time with
children, we consider it newsworthy. With all the demands on his time, with
all the places she needs to go, it seems unusual for a leader to pause and
visit with kids that he/she may never see again. After all, they're not
able to vote, yet! Kings and rulers in Jesus' time had no time for "photo
opportunities" with children or infants. Men of importance and influence
made appointments for an audience in the palace; going out into the streets
to give hugs was just not done.

Jesus' love, though, was not bound by protocol or procedure. He looked
at little boys, and could share a part of their father's dreams for them -
to be good sons, to grow into faithful men of God. He looked at little
girls, and his heart warmed in the glow of their smiles and the music of the
songs they sing with their mothers. His care for us includes skinned knees,
playing pretend and running and jumping and laughing and shouting. We are
all his beloved children, and we receive his blessings every day.

Lord, thank you for not only letting us come to you, but for inviting us
to come. Lay your hands on our messy hair and worried faces, and bless us.
Amen.
