Daily Devotion Tuesday September 27, 2005
This week's devotions are written by Zion member, Dale Eckart.
Who is Jesus? One who loves me even when he knows all about me
John 4:28-29 (NIV)
Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the
people, "Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be
the Christ?"
When Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well, he raised a few
eyebrows. It was not customary for a Jewish man to strike up a conversation
with a woman on the street, and it was even more unusual for a good and
observant Jew to be talking with a Samaritan. Samaritans didn't worship God
in the Temple in Jerusalem, and their racial heritage was a little murky,
compared with the Judeans. And yet, here he was, talking to her,
respectfully, about God, her sins, and salvation!
Did Jesus pronounce judgment on her, based on her checkered past?
Though Jesus did not condone what she had done, he also did not exclude her
from the reach of the Father's love and the promise of the Messiah. Even
knowing what she had done, and what she was doing now, he reached out to her
and her whole village in compassion, reconciliation and forgiveness.
Loving Lord, you have seen me even when I may not have wanted you to.
Thank you for loving me, even then. Give me eternal food and water, that I
may be strengthened to serve you. Amen.
