Daily Devotion Thursday September 29, 2005
This week's devotions are written by Zion member, Dale Eckart.
Who is Jesus? One who is moved to tears
John 11:34-36 (NIV)
"Where have you laid him?" Jesus asked. "Come and see, Lord," they replied.
Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, "See how much he loved him!"
Some of the confirmation students I work with were discussing which Bible
verse or verses they might choose to read in front of the congregation. One
found a footnote in his study Bible that pointed out the shortest verse,
John 11:35. "I want that one! Only two words!"
"Jesus wept." Two amazing and powerful words. He carried the sins of
the whole world onto the cross; not a sparrow falls to the ground, he said,
but that your Heavenly Father does not know about it. His very presence in
Bethany that day was tangible proof that God come into the world, not to
condemn the world, but that the world might be saved. And yet, the loss of
Lazarus moved him to tears. Jesus remembered the good times he had with
Mary, Martha, and their brother, and missed him. Even knowing that he could,
and would, call Lazarus out from his tomb, Jesus ached inside, and wept
with his friends. He grieves with us, when we suffer loss.
Jesus, may your loving arms enfold us when we hurt. Though we are
weeping now, help us remember that death has been beaten, and that someday
our tears will cease. Amen.
