Daily Devotion Friday September 30, 2005

This week's devotions are written by Zion member, Dale Eckart.

Who is Jesus? One who reaches out

Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this
man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save
what was lost." Luke 19:9-10 (NIV)

Early in his ministry, Jesus taught in synagogues and outside the Temple in
Jerusalem. But he also looked for people who didn't always fit in with the
priests and worshiping community. Zaccheus was a tax collector - a thief,
with a license to steal granted by the Roman occupation force. Yet Jesus
called him down from the tree, and ate dinner with him. He stopped
religious leaders from stoning a woman caught in adultery, and healed people
who were exiled outside the cities because they had leprosy.

God's promises don't stop there. Jesus proclaimed good news to Zaccheus'
whole house, and Peter baptized the household of Cornelius, a Roman
centurion. God doesn't put limits on who may receive the Spirit, or who God
finds acceptable. His scope of outreach is broader than ours, which is both
a challenge and a joy.

Savior of all, there is acceptance for us at the table of the Lord, no
matter who we are. Your mercy is greater than our sins; grant us grace to
see it, and accept it, and to recognize your incredible generosity. Amen.
