Daily Devotions Tuesday, April 11, 2006

The Daily Devotions this week are written by Pastor Ludwig. In the Christian
faith, this is the holiest week of the year as we prepare for the Triduum
(the "Three Days" of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday) and
Easter. We focus in our devotions this Holy Week upon the words which Jesus
spoke from the cross.

Matthew 27:46

"My God my God why have you forsaken me?"

Thought

As a child I wondered what part of Jesus was God and what part of Jesus was
human. Obviously, I thought, his body was the human part but his mind was
the "god part." If only it were that simple for Jesus! He wrestled with
pain and sorrow. He had doubts and fears. Yet, he remained true and faithful
to his love for us and obedient to the will of the heavenly Father. Even as
I am a complete blend of my parents DNA, Jesus is completely human (you and
me) while completely God. What an amazing living arrangement! All of this
for you and me.

These words of abandonment from the cross, "My God, my God, why have you
forsaken me," are not only Jesus' expression of despair, they are a direct
quote from psalm 22 verse 1. In that cry was he not only showing his own
humanity but proclaiming his solidarity with every human? In his suffering,
Jesus proclaims his oneness with you in your emotional and physical pain. In
his mortality he is wrapping his arms about you again this day. Do not face
this day as if alone.
