Daily Devotions Maundy Thursday, April 13, 2006
The Daily Devotions this week are written by Pastor Ludwig. In the Christian
faith, this is the holiest week of the year as we prepare for the Triduum
(the "Three Days" of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday) and
Easter. We focus in our devotions this Holy Week upon the words which Jesus
spoke from the cross.
Luke 23:46
"Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit."
Thought
Most of the time I ask my wife to drive the car when we are going somewhere
together. I like to use the time for reading and frankly, she is a better
driver than I am. She knows it (thank you dear for never rubbing it in) and
I know it. Sadly for Karen, while I am grateful for her driving, under it
all I struggle with letting go (otherwise known as back seat driver
syndrome). I know I am in good hands and yet I struggle with my own need to
be in control.
I believe that the need to be in control accounts for at least half of all
of our problems and most of our worries in life. The temptation that brought
down Adam and Eve was that if they ate the forbidden fruit, they would be
like God (that is, they would be in control). Of course, just the opposite
happened didn't it? While on the cross, Jesus turned it all over to the
heavenly Father. In that action came comfort in the midst of suffering,
courage to face even death with grace, and the conviction that evil would be
defeated.
How about you, think you could let go a bit on this Maundy Thursday? God's
hands will hold you firm.
