Daily Devotions Good Friday, April 14, 2006
The Daily Devotions this week are written by Pastor Ludwig. In the Christian
faith, this is the holiest week of the year as we prepare for the Triduum
(the "Three Days" of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday) and
Easter. We focus in our devotions this Holy Week upon the words which Jesus
spoke from the cross.
John 19:30
"It is finished."
Thought
How much is enough? My Father had a saying, If one is good, two is
better! He usually applied that saying to portions of desert. I struggle
with how much to tighten down screws and nuts on bolts. It is always that
extra turn of the ratchet for good measure that breaks the bolt. How much
is enough?
Jesus proclaimed from the cross that the work of salvation was finished. In
his death, our sins are once and for all forgiven. It is enough. I remember
holding the hand of a Christian man as he lay on his deathbed. I read
scripture and assured him that in Jesus Christs death he would also share
in the resurrection of Jesus. As he breathed his last he whispered to me, I
do hope that is true. I wept, not because he died but because he had lived
his whole life uncertain if he would be worthy enough to see heaven. How
sad that is.
The truth is that none of us is worthy of Gods forgiveness and love. We
will never do enough or be enough to warrant heaven and eternal life.
Thanks be to God we do not have to. Jesus aid, It is finished. He has
completed his mission of salvation. In him and because of him you are loved
and you have been given eternal life. How much is enough? Jesus is enough!
