Daily Devotions Tuesday, April 25, 2006
The Daily Devotions this week are written by Pastor Ludwig. During this
second week after the Resurrection of our Lord, we will be looking at Jesus
post-resurrection appearances as a spring board to considering how Jesus has
appeared to us in our lives in obvious and subtle ways.
Luke 24: 30-35
When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed, and broke
it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized
him; and he vanished out of their sight. They said to each other, "Did not
our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he
opened to us the scriptures?" And they rose that same hour and returned to
Jerusalem; and they found the eleven gathered together and those who were
with them, who said, "The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!"
Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them
in the breaking of the bread.
Thought
This is the story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. It was the day
of that first Easter and they were still grieving the death of Jesus. They
had heard the story of the Marys about the empty tomb and the angel who told
that that Jesus was alive, but they had been unable to believe it. That is
the way of humans. It is our way.
Jesus joined them on the road but they did not recognize him. They were not
looking for him and they did not expect him to be with them in their
journey. That is the way of humans. It is our way.
But he did not give up on them. He taught them, accompanied them and filled
them with peace and ultimately joy. That is the way of God. It is Jesus'
way.
We are told that it was in the breaking of bread which Jesus blessed and
gave to them that they recognized him. It was when they were at rest and
focusing upon him that suddenly they saw this fellow traveler for who he
was, their risen Lord Jesus Christ.
Look for Jesus in your life today. Take a moment and listen for his voice of
blessing. And as you break bread, thank him for teaching you, accompanying
you in the journey, and gifting you with peace and joy. It is the way of
God. It is Jesus' way.
