Daily Devotions Wednesday August 2, 2006
The devotions this week are written by Pastor Barry. In this week of record
high temperatures, he looks at Biblical references to heat.
Psalm 32:2-5
When I declared not my sin, my body wasted away through my groaning all day
long. For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried
up as by the heat of summer. I acknowledged my sin to thee, and I did not
hide my iniquity; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD";
then thou didst forgive the guilt of my sin.
There is perhaps nothing so stern as secret shame. As a teenager I remember
"burning rubber" with my father's Galaxy 500 every time I got my hands on
the keys. One day, my father was examining his car and he expressed dismay
at how quickly the rear tires seemed to be wearing out. I said nothing..for
years. Like a 96 degree day in Ann Arbor, the heat of my shame caused me
much discomfort and abiding pain.
The psalmist reminds us that when we confess our shame and guilt to God, we
are given forgiveness and relief from the heat. This gift was secured by
Jesus proclamation from the cross, "Father forgive them!" Shake off the heat
of shame and feel the cool life-giving love of your Lord. Many years
later, I would confess to my Father that I was the cause of those bald back
tires on his Galaxy 500. With his hand gently laid on my shoulder he looked
into me with his loving blue fatherly eyes and whispered, "I know Barry."
