Daily Devotions Thursday August 3, 2006
The devotions this week are written by Pastor Barry. In this week of record
high temperatures, he looks at Biblical references to heat.
Proverbs 15:8
"A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger quiets
contention"
Many summers ago, Karen and I and our then "little" girls went camping in
northern Ontario. It had been our dream to get as far away from civilization
as possible. The jewel of that vacation was to be the pristine and
primitive, Lake Missinaibi. After 50 kilometers on washboard road, stopping
regularly because of motion sickness and moose-photo-ops, we arrived at the
legendary lake only to find much of its shoreline and hills withered and
blackened by a forest fire. One careless camper had all but ruined paradise
(and our vacation).
The ancient proverb reminds us that the heat of one person's anger can do
much damage. Mel Gibson's recent drunken public ranting is merely a
reflection of a deeper problem that confronts us all, our inability to deal
with anger in healthy ways. The possibility of Mel-moments will fill our day
today. How will you respond? Torch someone or bring a cup of cool water?
