In the ancient world, names carried deep and holy meaning. This week Pastor
Barry will explore some of those Biblical names and their implications.

Adam

The name Adam comes from the Hebrew word (adamah) which means earth or dirt.
The next time someone tells you that "your name is mud" they are in a sense
correct. The fact that Scripture describes the creation of humanity in terms
of soil should create a twofold response: humility and thankfulness.

So often we act as though we were God. We stand in judgment over one another
as though we were the final word on truth. We expect others to conform to
our tastes and outlooks. We manipulate the atom not only for electrical
power but for political power. The list is almost endless. Yet we are made
from mud. We are not gods, merely creatures albeit endowed with intellect
and souls meant to reflect the glory and nature of God. Our mudness must
lead to humbleness and awe in the face of almighty God.

In Genesis chapter two, we have the picture of God scooping up the mud and
sculpture-like creating a work of art. When finished, God took this
mud-sculpted art and breathed into its nostrils and gave it life...you and
me. I know of nothing more intimate and loving than God holding me in arms
and breathing into me life. Shall we not live each day with thankfulness for
such closeness with God? Every breath you draw in today is an intimate
moment with your creator.

May we as the muddy people of God live this day in humbleness and with
thankful hearts.
