In the ancient world, names carried deep and holy meaning. This week Pastor
Barry will explore some of those Biblical names and their implications.

Eve

Genesis 3:20 "The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the
mother of all living."

There are a lot of things that are unclear about how the first woman got the
name Eve. Linguists debate if the name Eve is truly derivative from the
Hebrew word for "life" and it is amazing that she is given this name even
before becoming a mother, but laying aside these narrower concerns, it is
clear that women from the first, held a position of honor and deep respect
in the eyes of God and creation.

In a world where women are too often turned into objects and continue to be
denied equal opportunity with men (I am still waiting for a woman
president), the name Eve reminds us of the full partnership which men and
women have been given. Though sin has corrupted this divine design, St.
Paul reminds us that those who have become a new creation in Christ will
understand that, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor
free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ
Jesus." Galatians 3:28

Celebrate this partnership and live in its creative beauty!
