Daily Devotions Monday August 28, 2006
This week as the academic world around us gears up for another year of
study, Dale Eckart centers our devotions on the theme of learning.
Luke 2:46-47
"After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the
teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard
him was amazed at his understanding and his answers."
The story of 12-year-old Jesus in the temple, talking with the scholars
while his parents looked for him is probably one of the most famous stories
in the Bible that deals with teachers and students. Mary, Joseph, and their
extended family had gone up to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover.
Afterwards, they assumed that their son was returning with some other family
members - but he was missing. Returning to Jerusalem, they found Jesus with
the most learned men in Judea, talking as an equal. This youth was not
merely learning from his elders, but was teaching them, as well.
God has given each of us different gifts, and different talents to share.
He gives compassion and empathy, words of encouragement and hope. Others
show their gifts through the work of their hands - wood or wires, jewelry,
painting -- or the services they offer -- driving, lifting, washing,
sorting, guiding, turning the pages of a book. Our gifts need not be
measured against the best in the world, as long as they are given, in love,
to God's world and His people.
Jesus, you came to us and gave of yourself, in places we did not expect to
find you. Lead us to those places where we can teach and be taught, sharing
our gifts. Amen.
