Daily Devotions Wednesday August 30, 2006
This week as the academic world around us gears up for another year of
study, Dale Eckart centers our devotions on the theme of learning.
Matthew 7:28-29
"When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his
teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their
teachers of the law."
Substitute teachers face many challenges, walking into a classroom full of
students whom you've never seen before, and may never see again. They must
try to keep the classes in good order, without knowing whether the everyday
teacher is strict, or more relaxed. An additional challenge comes when the
class covers a specialized subject, such as chemistry, calculus, or foreign
language. Students may have questions that the sub may not be able to
answer.
Though Jesus visited synagogues and was invited to read the Scriptures and
teach the people, He was not exactly a "substitute teacher." His insights
and examples were drawn straight from the Source, and the Spirit of God
moved in the hearts of his students. In one sense, the other rabbis were
like substitutes - Yahweh had given the law and the prophets, and the rabbis
were teaching the people His words, in His stead ... and trying to keep the
class under control! We thank God for all the rabbis He has given us, to
teach us His words, in His stead.
Gracious Father, thank you for pastors, youth leaders, teachers of adults
and children. Give them your words to share, and your strength for the
sharing. Amen.
