Daily Devotions Thursday August 31, 2006

This week as the academic world around us gears up for another year of
study, Dale Eckart centers our devotions on the theme of learning.

2 Timothy 3:14

"But as for you, continue in what you have learned and what you have become
convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it."

Earlier this year, I received an email inviting me to attend a motivational
seminar, to improve my leadership and success in business. Some of the
speakers included retired General Colin Powell and former NYC mayor Rudi
Guliani. Based on their experiences as they led others through difficult
times and overcame obstacles, they could tell me how to be a leader, too.
The organizers of the seminar clearly wanted to use the fame of their guest
speakers to add credibility to the subject - we could hear about leadership
directly from the leaders. I'm not sure whether Powell or Guliani had any
original ideas, but those ideas would certainly seem profound, coming from
them.

As children of God and students of His way, we need answers to questions
about what God wants for us, and from us. We seek words of grace, comfort,
and encouragement. The speakers of those words need not be famous, but they
must be trustworthy. Paul urged Timothy to rely on teachings from the
Spirit of God, not those based on greed or malice. Luther relied on the
Scripture, focusing on that which best showed Christ and His great love for
us.

Dear Lord, give us confidence to rely on Your words, and to be convinced
that you will never leave us nor forsake us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
