Daily Devotions Friday September 1, 2006

This week as the academic world around us gears up for another year of
study, Dale Eckart centers our devotions on the theme of learning.

 

Philippians 4:8-9 

"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is noble, whatever is right,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is
excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things.  Whatever you have
learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me - put into practice."

 

"There will be a test on Friday,"  the teacher announces, and the students
begin to worry.  Nearly all academic classes include a test, or examination
of some kind, so that the students can demonstrate what they have learned.
Many students begin frantically searching for clues or hints about what
questions the teacher will ask - how many chapters?  Multiple-choice
questions, matching, true / false, or ... gulp ... an essay test?

 

In our journey of faith, we have daily homework, as the apostles did:
bearing one another's burdens, sharing in the breaking of bread and prayer.
We may face tests, such as an illness or death of a loved one.  Our essay
test might be when someone asks, "With all the lies that the politicians are
telling, I don't know what to believe.  What do you believe?"

 

Thankfully, our Heavenly Father has seen to it that all of our tests are
"open book."  He has told us what he expects of us:  do justice, love mercy
and walk humbly with him; to love Him with all our heart, mind, and soul,
and to love our neighbor as we love our self.

And the final exam?  Jesus already took that, on our behalf - and He aced
it!

 

Loving Teacher, even though we have the Book, we don't always prepare for
our tests as we should.  Forgive us and strengthen us, to be your disciples.
Amen.
