Daily Devotion Monday December 4, 2006

The Daily Devotions for the next three weeks pastor Ludwig will focus on
each word of the phrase, Jesus Is Coming. This week we look at the
attributes of "Jesus."

Luke 2:7

"And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth,
and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn."

Jesus Defines Vulnerability

Having run out of gas on the Illinois turnpike on my way back to Seminary, I
was picked up by a kindly young woman. I thanked her for being willing to
become vulnerable for the sake of another human being. She laughed and
pointed to the gargantuan dog in the back seat and smiling said, "It really
is no risk. If you touched me, Bluto would rip our your throat."

Unlike the woman on the turnpike, Jesus came into our physical reality and
risked it all for you. He was born in a dirty cave that housed sheep and
goats to a poor couple in one of the poorest villages in one of the poorest
provinces of the Roman Empire. He waved all of his "rights" as the "Word"
who created all of the cosmos, in order to complete the risky plan of your
salvation.

Jesus has redefined vulnerability as noble and powerful. We work so hard to
protect ourselves from pain or discomfort of any kind. Yet Jesus teaches us
that it is from the vantage point of vulnerability where we stand the
greatest opportunity to change the life of another person and make them
whole. And when all is completed in this life, it is how we have touched
others that matters most and will define the significance of our time on
earth.
