The Daily Devotions for the next three weeks pastor Ludwig will focus on
each word of the phrase, Jesus Is Coming. This week we look at the
attributes of "Jesus."
John 15: 12-15
"This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
Greater love has no man than this, that one lay down his life for his
friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I
call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing;
but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I
have made known to you."
Jesus Defines Love
By taking our own flesh and blood, Jesus has taught us how to test and see
if love is for real or if it is just a fleeting emotion. His love redefines
those who receive it. He tells his disciples that because he loves them,
their status has changed from servant to friend. Love changes our status.
Because we are loved by a God whose love leads to action, we are no longer
hopeless but hope-filled. In Christ we are not a nobody but we are a child
of the kingdom whose name has been written in the book of life.
Such love can change the world! At the end of the second century a.d.
Tertullian noted that the Roman pagan world was amazed at the sincerity and
love of Christians. He wrote, "See [the pagans say about Christians] how
they love one another and how they are ready to die for each other!"
We are redefined by Jesus' love. We can change the hearts and lives of
others by our willingness to put to death our personal pride or self
interest. Today who can you love in a Christlike way?
