Daily Devotion Thursday December 7, 2006

The Daily Devotions for the next three weeks pastor Ludwig will focus on
each word of the phrase, Jesus Is Coming. This week we look at the
attributes of "Jesus."

Luke 12:22 -24

And he said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious
about your life, what you shall eat, nor about your body, what you shall
put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.
Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither
storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you
than the birds!

Jesus defines who and what is valuable

Clyde was in his 80's recently widowed and living in a very small mobile
home. I was visiting him to check up on how he was coping with living
without his wife of over 60 years. Through tears that were more from
thankfulness than grief he said, "Pastor, I am the richest man on earth." I
have had a wonderful wife. I have loving children. God loves me. What more
could a man ever desire."

Those words have echoed in my heart for 20 years. Clyde was not talking
about cash dollars or what they can buy. He was talking about what really
matters.what Jesus lived and taught and brought to those who will receive
it. He was talking about relationship.

December in America is a time of mixed signals (what a friend of mine calls
"weird mojo") about what really matters. In the name of the one who taught
us that the poorest of the poor are of utmost value, we spend enormous
amounts of time and money buying things for people who already have
everything. On the birthday of the Prince of Peace, we become frantic over
brokering a solution to the problem of which family members we will visit on
which day in order to appease the demands of our extended family.

Jesus came to lift up the worth of every person. In the poverty of his birth
he redefined affluence. In the modesty of his ministry he lifted up the
humble. In the pain of his dying he joined God to all who suffer and sorrow.
In his resurrection he declared us to be victoriously valuable.

Thanks Clyde. Sing with the saints of heaven!
