Daily Devotion Wednesday December 13, 2006

The Daily Devotions for the next three weeks pastor Ludwig will focus on
each word of the phrase, Jesus Is Coming. This week we look at IS.

 

Colossians  1:13 - 19

He has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to the
kingdom of his beloved Son,  in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of
sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation;
for in him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and
invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities --
all things were created through him and for him. He is before all things,
and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church;
he is the beginning, the  first-born from the dead, that in everything he
might be pre-eminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to
dwell,   

 

St. Paul makes a lot of claims for Jesus in this text. "He is the first
born"  is quite a claim. I am told that the birth position of being first is
the hardest. I would not know since I am the "baby" of my family.  But if I
were to believe my brother's claims, then the position of firstborn is one
of great trial.  Great expectations are laid upon the shoulders of the
firstborn while age and exhaustion of the parents usually lead to no
expectation of the baby. I would beg to differ, but perhaps that is best
reserved for another forum.

 

Much was laid upon the shoulders of Jesus. It was not just the burden of the
cross which he carried to Calvary: it was me - my fears, guilt and shame -
the firstborn from the dead has carried; it IS me - my hopes and longings -
the firstborn of creation is engaged in and continues to lift me up.  This
Jesus whose birth we prepare to celebrate is the Firstborn of God our Savior
and Lord.
