Daily Devotion Tuesday December 19, 2006
The Daily Devotions for the next three weeks pastor Ludwig will focus on
each word of the phrase, Jesus Is Coming. This week we look at COMING.
John 1:9
"The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world."
Coming or Going?
Last Sunday after worship I asked on of Zion's members, "How are you doing?"
With a rather frazzled look she answered, "These days, I really don't know
whether I am coming or going!" I believe she was referring to the hectic
nature of trying to oversee the schedule of a busy young family at
Christmas. However, she might very well have been referring to everyday
life. There are so many demands made upon us and so many unwelcome
surprises, that it is not always easy to know whether we are "coming or
going."
John the evangelist begins his Gospel by telling us that the "True Light"
(whom he will later identify as Jesus) "was coming into the world." What an
amazing use of a verbal noun (participle), "was coming." He was looking
back toward events that occurred at the beginning of the first century,
while writing it down at the very end of that century. By using a present
tense participle to express a "continuing action," John is announcing that
Jesus (the Light) has come, is coming, and will always come to lighten
people like you and me who don't know whether we are coming or going.
Wherever your mind and body go today, Jesus is coming!
