Daily Devotion Wednesday December 20, 2006
The Daily Devotions for the next three weeks pastor Ludwig will focus on
each word of the phrase, Jesus Is Coming. This week we look at COMING.
Jeremiah 31:31- 33
"Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new
covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the
covenant which I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to
bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant which they broke, though I
was their husband, says the LORD. But this is the covenant which I will
make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put
my law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts; and I will be
their God, and they shall be my people.
I don't know about you, but the phrase, "the days are coming." strikes a
little fear in my heart. My brother and I are 7 years apart. He is the
firstborn and as children he was always a foot taller and 50 pounds bigger
than me. In other words, the only advantage I had over him was words. I
verbally tormented him and he sat on me. During those trying moments of
sibling rivalry my Mother would often be heard to say, "You wait until your
Father gets home." That threat usually struck battle-ending fear into our
hearts.
The surprise in Jeremiah 31 is that what follows the introductory words is
not a threat but a promise. God told his people to be patient in adversity
and trust to divine timing. Trust that the day of vindication would come.
Hope in God that the day of deliverance was on its way. God would make a
new covenant with us; one of forgiveness not retribution - a relationship
written in love on our hearts not one of law chiseled on stone-cold
tablets.
The day did come. A new covenant was made with us at the cross of Calvary.
It was then Jesus shed his "blood of the new covenant" for us. That days
are coming.the days have come.Jesus is coming!
