Daily Devotion Thursday December 21, 2006

The Daily Devotions for the next three weeks pastor Ludwig will focus on
each word of the phrase, Jesus Is Coming. This week we look at COMING.

Revelation 3:11 "I am coming soon; hold fast what you have, so that no one
may seize your crown."

The Now but Not Yet

The year before Karen and I were married, I was a seminarian in St. Louis,
Missouri and she was in northern Indiana at Valparaiso University. Because
of distance, schedule and financial resources (or the lack thereof), we were
able to see each other one weekend per month. The week preceding each of
those weekends was wonderful and awful all at the same time. It was a week
of loneliness and yet expectation; a week of joyous preparation companion to
sad separation. As I write this, 36 years later I can still feel the power
of those emotions even as I give thanks with all my heart for a marriage
partnership that has, does and will grace me beyond what I could have ever
known in those "in between times."

We live and believe in the now but not yet. God's kingdom has come in the
birth of Jesus and yet it will not be consummated until that day when Jesus
returns. It is easy to see why we can cycle from joy to sadness, from
conviction to doubt as we live in "the between times." Jesus has come,
Jesus is here, Jesus will come again. That is the wondrous mystery that
fills and surrounds us. As John writes in Revelation, Jesus, "is coming
soon; hold fast!"
