Daily Devotion Tuesday December 26, 2006
This week's devotions are written by Seminarian Kelsay Parker. We will be
journeying into a "post-Christmas" question: "What child is this?" Turning
to Jesus himself to learn more about whom this Savior is who has come into
the world.
What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary's lap is sleeping?
whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping?
John 4:13-14
Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,
but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be
thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water
gushing up to eternal life."
Jesus is the Living Water
Falling asleep as a child was always a long drawn out process for me. I
would use as many stalling techniques as possible.but my favorite had to be,
"Mom, I need a drink of water!" This would give me the opportunity to
either get up out of bed, or to have mom come in one last time before I fell
asleep. I think I was kind of scared to fall asleep back then- falling into
unconsciousness, being lost in the dark, missing out on the stuff going on
downstairs after bedtime. The drink of water trick was one last way of
feeling safe, taken care of, not alone.
In John 4, Jesus describes himself like a drink of water. Not a "tall drink
of water" (a.k.a. a handsome man) but the kind of living water that changes
us.fills us up.overflows to eternal life. Kind of like that last drink of
water we look for before going to bed.the one that brings mom back into the
room one last time..it makes us feel safe, taken care of, not alone.
What child is this? This child is Jesus, the living water.
This, this is Christ the king, whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary.
