Daily Devotion Wednesday December 27, 2006
This week's devotions are written by Seminarian Kelsay Parker. We will be
journeying into a "post-Christmas" question: "What child is this?" Turning
to Jesus himself to learn more about whom this Savior is who has come into
the world.
What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary's lap is sleeping?
whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping?
John 6: 51
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread
will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world
is my flesh."
Jesus is the Bread of Life: Wonder bread or whole grain?
Jesus compares himself to bread in John 6. Bread? Okay, so if Jesus is
bread, what kind of bread is he? There is a "whole grain" craze going on
these days! WonderBread has been replaced by the nutritionist recommended
"whole grain variety!" Sturdy, and heart healthy, whole grain is the way to
go for nourishment, and nutrition.
"Give us this day our daily bread," we pray in the Lord's prayer. We pray,
trusting that God provides us with all we need, including the nourishment
that comes from scripture, prayer, and from Jesus himself in the grace
filled meal of Communion. We are gifted with the living bread that comes
down from heaven - Jesus who gives us food for the journey, forgiveness in
His name, and hope in the resurrection.
What child is this? This child is Jesus, the bread of life.
This, this is Christ the king, whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary.
