Daily Devotion Friday December 29, 2006

This week's devotions are written by Seminarian Kelsay Parker. We will be
journeying into a "post-Christmas" question: "What child is this?" Turning
to Jesus himself to learn more about whom this Savior is who has come into
the world.

What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary's lap is sleeping?

whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping?

John 10:11

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep

Jesus is the Good Shepherd

Psalm 23 (The Lord is my shepherd.) is possibly the most beloved passage in
all of scripture. It's beautiful lines paint pictures of peace, rest,
security. But what does it mean to call Jesus our shepherd? It means we
are sheep!! And what qualities to we ascribe to sheep? Obstinacy,
dim-wittedness, slowness..you get the picture. Our culture can't stand the
though of being a "sheep." We are taught we must be independent not
dependant - quick not slow! And yet, Jesus encourages us to think of
ourselves as sheep, sheep with a good shepherd. Jesus promises to do all
the things a good shepherd would do - feed, care for, look after His flock.
But he promises to do the one thing only the good shepherd would do - lay
down his life for his sheep. Give thanks to God that you are a sheep.one of
God's sheep!

What child is this? This child is Jesus, the Good Shepherd.

This, this is Christ the king, whom shepherds guard and angels sing;

haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary
